Referrals & Rebates
Medicare Assistance

To access Medicare rebates for psychology appointments, you will need a referral from your General Practitioner (GP) or Psychiatrist under a Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP), also commonly referred to as a Mental Health Care Plan.

If you intend to use private health extras to subsidise your appointments, a referral is not required. Clients are also welcome to self-refer. If you choose to self-refer, you can simply book an appointment online or contact the practice directly. Please note that appointments attended without a Mental Health Treatment Plan are not eligible for a Medicare rebate.
The current Medicare rebate for a standard 50-minute psychology session is $98.95.
A Mental Health Treatment Plan is completed with your GP prior to your first psychology appointment and provides access to up to 10 individual sessions per calendar year. Sessions may be delivered in person or via telehealth.

Typically, your GP will initially refer you for six sessions. After your sixth session, your psychologist will provide a brief report to your GP outlining your progress and recommendations for ongoing treatment. You will then return to your GP for a review, and if appropriate, your GP may provide a further referral for four additional sessions, allowing access to a total of 10 Medicare-rebated sessions per calendar year.

Please note in order to claim your Medicare rebate, Coastal Psychology Centre will require a copy of your MHTP at or prior to your first appointment. If for any reason you are unable to provide a copy of your referral and MHTP you will be unable to claim a Medicare rebate.

Private Health

Depending on your extras cover you may be entitled to a rebate via your private health insurance. Rebates can assist in covering a portion of the consultation fee. If you are planning to access rebates via your private health insurer please call your private health insurer to confirm your cover prior to your first appointment.
Please note: You are unable to claim both Medicare and Private Health insurance for the same session.
Cancellation Policy
Due to high demand for appointments, we require at least 48 hours’ notice if you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment.
Appointments cancelled on the day of the session, or where a client does not attend, will incur the full session fee. Late cancellations limit the opportunity for other clients waiting for appointments and prevent the allocated time from being offered to someone else.
For Monday appointments, any cancellations or rescheduling requests must be received by the Friday prior, as weekends are considered outside of business hours.
Appointment reminders are sent via email and SMS two business days prior to your scheduled session.
If you are unwell and unable to attend in person, telehealth sessions are available as an alternative.
Please note that Medicare and private health insurance rebates cannot be claimed for missed or cancelled appointments.
